One of the main points of FOPAP is to educate the world that print and paper is not only environmentally friendly, but very probably carbon neutral.
Here’s why:
Nature grows the tree using carbon extracted from CO2 in the air.
We cut the tree and plant another, which carries on the invaluable processes of CO2 sequestration.
We use the tree to make paper, effectively
‘locking up’ the carbon.
The paper is printed upon. This is important
as ink has been shown to extend the life of
the paper in landfill by as much as 50%
(the nasty bacteria can’t eat through it).
The paper is sent to landfill where, contrary
to popular belief, 70% - 80% of the carbon
remains – forever. In other words, it does
not decay back into the atmosphere (in any great volumes).
This carbon extracted from the atmosphere and now locked in the paper is sufficient to ‘pay’ for all of the fossil fuel emissions made by the paper mill and the printing machines, right through to delivery.
Therefore communications using the printed medium are carbon neutral and the most environmentally friendly on the planet

THE TRUTH ABOUT TREES
Take a straw poll on the street today and ask anyone about trees and you will likely hear one of the following sound bites (or many variations thereof):
Trees are the ‘lungs’ of the Earth
Trees ‘breathe’ CO2
Without trees there would be less (or even no) oxygen
Trees are a permanent store for carbon
Deforestation directly contributes to global warming
It all sounds very reasonable and plausible. But guess what? NONE OF IT IS TRUE.
